For 4 servings
Wash dal and cook with 3 cups water, turmeric, and salt until soft and mushy.
Cook basmati rice separately until fluffy.
For tarka: Heat ghee and add cumin seeds until they splutter.
Add sliced garlic and fry until golden.
Add chopped onion and cook until soft.
Add diced tomato and red chili powder. Cook for 3 minutes.
Pour this tarka over the cooked dal. Add green chilies.
Serve dal over rice, garnished with cilantro and lemon wedge.
Tip: Add a pat of butter on top of dal for extra richness.
